Stretch Marks Are Normal

Studies show a wide range of prevalence in stretch marks from 50-90%  and that stretch marks affect all genders. They are nothing to be ashamed of and are an incredible way for your body to adapt to changes in its size.

Stretch marks, or striae, are long, narrow streaks, lines, or bands that can develop in the skin. They typically appear as slightly indented, discolored lines. They can vary in color, ranging from red or pink to purple and eventually fading to a lighter color, such as white or silver.

Stretch marks often occur when the skin undergoes rapid stretching or changes in size. Some common causes of stretch marks include:

  1. Pregnancy: As a woman's abdomen expands during pregnancy, it can develop stretch marks on the stomach or breasts.
  2. Rapid growth: Adolescents experiencing growth spurts may develop stretch marks on their thighs, hips, or breasts.
  3. Weight gain: Significant weight gain can lead to stretch marks as the skin stretches to accommodate the increased body mass.
  4. Bodybuilding: Intensive muscle growth in a short period can result in stretch marks, particularly on the arms and shoulders.
  5. Corticosteroid use: Prolonged use of topical or oral corticosteroids can weaken the skin's elasticity and make it more prone to developing stretch marks.

Stretch marks result from the skin's middle layer (dermis) being stretched beyond its capacity, causing the collagen and elastin fibers in the skin to break. This damage to the skin's structural proteins results in the characteristic appearance of stretch marks. While they are not harmful, they can be a cosmetic concern for some individuals.

Various treatments are available for reducing the appearance of stretch marks, including topical creams, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion. However, it's important to note that no treatment can eliminate stretch marks, and their appearance can improve but not necessarily disappear entirely. Over time, stretch marks tend to fade and become less noticeable.

For years I was ashamed of my stretch marks. It was only when I realized lots of people (of all genders!) have them that I began accepting them.
